About the Author
La Doris "Sam" Heinly earned a B. A. degree in Art History from California State University, Fullerton, and a Masters in Social Work from California State University, Long Beach. Sam's interest in art and Alzheimer's disease began in college where she wrote her thesis on Art with Alzheimer's as an Intervention for the Reduction of Agitation and Sadness. During her research for this study, she learned about the Memories in the Making Program. MIM was the only art program for Alzheimer's patients at the time and it just happened to be ten miles from her home. Sam fell in love with the program and focused her entire career as a social worker and artist on art and Alzheimer's. Sam began contracting with the Alzheimer's Association Orange County Chapter in 1998, where she is responsible for refining, formalizing and documenting the traiining proactices found in her book. She is also an expert in training suport staff and volunteers on using art as a meaningful activity for people living with Alzheimer's. Sam's goal is to inspire art facilitators and to replicate this program throughout the country and world. In Sam's words, "Early in my career I was fascinated by the positive power of creativity. In working with many patients of varing diagnoses, I was captivated by the unique differences in their creations. No two people even remotely duplicated the same art. Clearly the art created was a result of individual life experience and often the working out of internal feelings. After viewing thousands of works of art, I have observed the disease progress through the art and witnessed a similar progression from one Alzheimer's artist to the next. As the artists continue to paint through the stages of the disease, there are recongnizable tendencies in the art that appear to be universal. However, perhaps the greatest similarity is the hopefulness that occurs in the stories accompanying the art."
